Flavourama Performatory
Open Call for Dancers & Musicians
In Austria’s theater landscape, classical and contemporary dance, as well as music, often take center stage. Recognizing this, artistic directors Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer see it as their responsibility to support professional artists from street and club cultures by providing them with a platform to increase their visibility. This mission drives the creation of Flavourama Performatory, now in its fourth edition.
Who Are We Looking For
— We are seeking six street and club dancers (Hip Hop, House, Popping, Locking, Waacking, Voguing, Breaking, and related styles), and three musicians who can play unplugged/acoustic (all genres welcome!). —
This Open Call is aimed at artists who are eager to explore their performative skills and push creative boundaries. Selected artists will take part in a performance walk at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg, bringing street and club dance into new artistic contexts and fostering connections with other art forms. Additionally, the program aims to support professional development through knowledge exchange and valuable input from experienced workshop facilitators.
What to Expect
To challenge the artistic codes of the respective dance and music styles and to explore their adaptability in a new, interdisciplinary context, the selected artists will participate in two public workshops on theater-related topics. These workshops will provide valuable tools and insights to enhance artistic expression.
Mackenzy Bergile will give a Workshop about „Writing dance: Movement as Revelation“ alongside Jordina Millà with the topic „Improvisation Through the Compositional Mind“.
Following the workshops, artists will be grouped into three interdisciplinary trios, each consisting of two dancers and one musician. Each group will receive a curator-led tour of the current exhibition by Jaqueline Mesmaeker, a Belgian artist known for her poetic visual riddles and dissolving boundaries between image, language and space, making it an exciting source of inspiration for the interdisciplinary performances at the Museum der Moderne Salzburg.
Each trio will then have approximately two hours to create a 10-minute performance, drawing inspiration from one specific artwork by Jaqueline Mesmaeker. Through this process, Flavourama’s artistic directors, Farah Deen and Olivia Mitterhuemer, will act as Outside Eyes, offering guidance on choreography and improvisation.
The performances will take place during a performance walk in the evening within the exhibition, directly engaging with the selected artworks. A host will guide the audience through the exhibition, where the three performances will unfold in a pop-up format, offering a dynamic and immersive experience.
No limits are set on the performative playground – we are excited to see this year’s Flavourama Performatory unfold!
