Performatory
7.9.2023 – ARGEKULTUR Salzburg
Flavourama Performatory is an improvised performance evening with a focus on the spontaneous exchange between (live) music and dance. In order to respond to current discourses and the noticeably growing demand of various festivals and choreographers to show styles like Hip Hop, House Dance or Breaking also in a stage context, different artists will be selected to open new creative spaces together and finally create three improvised short pieces.
To test the codes of the respective dance and music styles – which were predominantly shaped by marginalized groups in the USA in the early 80s – in a new context, the selected artists will receive a workshop in interdisciplinary improvisation and instant composition by Nayana Keshava Bhat before the performance. Her many years of experience in real-time composition will thus merge with the conventions of street and club dance, or the music that goes with it, to offer the groups a performative playground where no limits are set.
As a counterpart to the three improvised contributions, Barcelona-based artist Oulouy (Aerowaves Artist 2022) will present his 30-minute piece “Black” – a reflection on violence and emancipation of blackness in today’s world through a body that is both wounded and celebrated.
A co-event of Flavourama and ARGEkultur Salzburg.

OULOUY – ‘BLACK’
‘Black’ proposes a reflection on violence and emancipation of blackness in the contemporary world through a body that narrates, challenges and bothers, a body that is both wounded and celebrated. Using a stage design devoid of artifice and overflowing with symbolism, Oulouy – creator, choreographer and performer of the piece – takes as reference episodes from recent history, such as the #blacklivesmatter movement or the assassination of George Floyd, to rethink the black African body in the Western world with a choreographic repertoire that is inspired by key styles of the great cities in the African continent and the diaspora in the United Stades of America, such as coupé-décalé, azonto, afrohouse, ndomboló or krump.
Direction, choreography and performance: Oulouy
